kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spots in Greece

A north wind that blows all summer over the Aegean, hundreds of islands with turquoise water, a sand spit where two seas meet: Greece is one of the most beautiful board sports destinations in the Mediterranean.

248 spots listed. Rideable days are computed from two full years of readings (2024 and 2025), spot by spot.

Greece: an overview

The land of the meltemi

In Greece, summer has a name: the meltemi. This dry, powerful wind blows down from the north over the Aegean from late spring to early autumn, with a regularity that has shaped island life since antiquity. For riders, it promises long weeks of wind under cloudless skies, in warm, remarkably clear water.

Board sports have a real tradition here. Greece won Olympic gold in windsurfing in 1996, and several islands became essential stops for European windsurfers as early as the 1980s. Kiting and wing foiling took over, with centres set up on the windiest beaches.

One island, one character

Each island receives the meltemi in its own way. Depending on the relief and the orientation of the coast, the wind accelerates, shifts or eases, and the same day can bring a gale on one beach and calm water in the next bay. The Cyclades are often the windiest; the Dodecanese holds some of the most famous spots; Crete and the Ionian Islands have their own wind patterns.

Travelling to Greece to ride also means travelling by ferry, from island to island, choosing your destination according to your level and the week's wind.

Gentler in spring and autumn

In high summer, the meltemi can get very strong and the beaches very busy. The start and end of the season often strike a better balance: more moderate wind, quieter islands and a sea that is still warm.

The best regions

The Cyclades

Paros, Naxos, Mykonos: the white-and-blue islands of the postcard, and among the most exposed to the meltemi. Spots for every level, in sheltered bays or in full wind.

The Dodecanese

Rhodes, Kos and Karpathos, close to the Turkish coast. World-famous spots, from the tip of Prasonisi to the wild bays of Karpathos.

The North Aegean

Limnos and the northern islands, far from mass tourism. Wild beaches, flat water and an authentic atmosphere.

Crete

The country's largest island, with a wind-battered east coast and mountains plunging into the sea.

The Ionian Islands

In the west, Corfu and its neighbours, greener, with afternoon thermal winds and a different feel from the Aegean.

The spots not to miss

  • Theologos, Rhodes (Dodecanese)

    Rhodes

On the island's west coast, a long beach exposed to a steady cross wind. A complete, accessible spot, popular with windsurfers and kiters alike.

Good to know

  • The meltemi: powerful and sometimes gusty in high summer, it can make some beaches unrideable. Pick an island that offers sheltered spots.
  • Ferries: a strong meltemi can delay or cancel crossings. Taking gear on a ferry needs planning; many centres rent equipment on site.
  • Swimming zones: in summer, beaches mark areas reserved for swimmers. Use the designated corridors to reach the water.
  • Sun and heat: sun protection, water and a hat are essential in July and August.
  • Season: late May to mid-September for the meltemi; spring and autumn are calmer, on the water and on land.
