Kouremenos Beach / Crete kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
Greece
Overview
Kouremenos is THE most famous kitesurfing spot in Crete, located near the village of Palekastro at the eastern tip of the island. This long sand and pebble beach faces east, offering an exceptional setting with Cretan mountains as backdrop and views of Kasos island offshore.
The Meltemi is channeled and accelerated between Crete and the Dodecanese islands (Kasos, Karpathos), arriving side-onshore from the northwest on this east-facing coast. Conditions are remarkably consistent from June to September, with flat water in the protected bay. Several kite schools make this spot accessible to all levels.

On the water
Remarkably flat water in the bay, protected by the coastline configuration. Ideal for learning and freestyle. Sand and pebble bottom, progressive depth – you can stand for a good distance.
Further out, light chop forms as the Meltemi strengthens. On strong wind days (25+ knots), small waves form at the edge of the zone. Crystal clear water, pleasant temperature in summer (23-26°C). Moderate current possible southward along the coast.
Parking
Large dirt parking lot behind the beach, easy access. In high season, it can fill up quickly – arriving before 11am is recommended. Tavernas and a mini-market are nearby. Palekastro village is 2km away with all services.
Wind specificities
The Meltemi is the main wind engine of this spot. It is channeled between the eastern tip of Crete and the islands of Kasos/Karpathos, creating a Venturi effect that accelerates the wind. On this east coast, wind arrives side-onshore from the NW/WNW, typically 15-25 knots from June to September.
Wind usually picks up late morning and peaks in early afternoon. In July-August, 25-30 knot days are frequent. The spot is very reliable with over 80% of windy days in summer. Morning thermal effect possible before the Meltemi kicks in.
Hazards
Coastal current southward during strong Meltemi – can drift kitesurfers. Exposed rocks at the north and south ends of the bay – respect navigation limits. Pebbles on the beach making launching sometimes uncomfortable – shoes are recommended.
In strong wind (25+ knots), conditions become challenging for beginners. Increased vigilance in July-August when the Meltemi can surprise with its strength. No permanent rescue service – schools provide supervision in their zone.
