Greece
Overview
Mikri Vigla North Beach (Parthena) is THE most famous kitesurfing spot on Naxos and one of the best in the Cyclades. Located on the west coast of the island, this spot benefits from an exceptional position at the foot of the Mikri Vigla rocky promontory that separates two beaches. The north beach (Parthena) faces NW, receiving the N/NNE Meltemi as perfect onshore to side-onshore. Water is shallow over a large distance, creating ideal conditions for learning. White sand and turquoise water make it a paradise setting. Several kite schools operate on this beach, making Mikri Vigla a major kitesurfing hub in Greece.

Technical details of Mikri Vigla North Beach / Naxos spot
The spot works with winds from N, NNE, NNW.
Spot functioning
Mikri Vigla's north beach (Parthena) works with the N/NNE Meltemi onshore/side-onshore. Shallow water for 100-200m creates a perfect school zone. Several kite schools share the beach with dedicated zones. Advanced riders sail further out in the chop. The Mikri Vigla rocky promontory separates the north beach (flat water, school) from the south beach (Sahara — waves, advanced). The long white sand beach offers tremendous space. Works from June to September, almost every day in July-August.

On the water
Crystal clear turquoise water typical of the Cyclades, 22-26°C in summer. Lycra often sufficient in peak season, 2mm shorty if needed. White sandy bottom, very shallow water for the first 100-200 meters — you can stand very far out. Moderate chop further offshore, waves possible beyond the promontory. Clear water with excellent visibility.
Parking
Free dirt parking by the beach at Mikri Vigla. Access via the coastal road from Naxos Town (about 15 min drive). In high season (July-August), parking can be very crowded — arrive early. Kite schools often have dedicated spaces for their students. Some tavernas and accommodations nearby.
Wind specificities
The Cycladic Meltemi blows from N/NNE and reaches Mikri Vigla after being channeled between Paros and Naxos. On the NW-facing north beach (Parthena), wind arrives onshore to side-onshore, an ideal direction for kitesurfing. The inter-island channeling accelerates the wind: typical strength of 18-28 knots in summer, with peaks to 30+. The Meltemi rises around 11am-noon, peaks between 2pm and 6pm, then eases in the evening. Very reliable season from June to September, with wind series of 3-7 consecutive days in July-August. Naxos is renowned for its consistent Meltemi — one of the most reliable spots in the Aegean Sea.
Hazards
Generally very safe spot. Meltemi can build to 28-30 knots, challenging for true beginners. High traffic in peak season — watch for other kiters and swimmers. Rocks from the Mikri Vigla promontory to the south must be avoided. Moderate current along the coast. Strong sun exposure — sun protection and hydration essential. Some sea urchins possible in rocky areas.
