Overview

Golden Beach is THE reference spot of southern Evia, located near Karystos at the island's southeastern tip. This spot is famous for the Kavo Doro (Cape Kafireas) passage, one of the most powerful wind corridors in the entire Aegean Sea, where the Meltemi funnels between Evia and Andros island with spectacular acceleration.

The south-facing beach receives the Meltemi from N/NNE as side-onshore, with intensities regularly exceeding 25 knots. A legendary spot that attracts riders from across Greece and Europe for its exceptional and consistent summer wind conditions.

Spot functioning

The spot works from June to September with the Meltemi, which blows almost daily in July-August. Best conditions are in the afternoon (1-6 PM) when thermals amplify the Meltemi. In strong Meltemi (>25 knots), use a small kite (7-9m²). The thermal southerly works outside Meltemi episodes but is less reliable. Golden Beach is accessible by ferry from Rafina (Attica) to Marmari, then 15 min drive.

On the water

The water is choppier than in the Euboean Gulf due to exposure to the open Aegean Sea to the south. In Meltemi, chop of 0.5-1m with waves reaching 1.5m in strong wind. Sandy bottom with progressive depth. Crystal-clear water typical of this Aegean zone. Water temperature: 22-26°C in summer.

Parking

Parking accessible along the road leading to Golden Beach from Karystos (about 5 km). Large unimproved parking area behind the beach. In summer, the spot is busy with riders and tourists. Tavernas and some accommodation available nearby. Karystos offers all services (supermarkets, rentals, restaurants).

Wind specificities

🔥 EXTREME VENTURI EFFECT: The Kavo Doro passage between southern Evia's tip and Andros island is one of the most violent wind corridors in the Mediterranean. The N/NNE Meltemi is compressed in this 8 km-wide channel and accelerates by 20% to 50%, regularly jumping from 15-20 knots (offshore) to 25-35 knots in the corridor.

Wind arrives side-onshore from N/NNE on the south-facing beach. Typical strength: 15-25 knots, gusting to 30-35 knots in strong Meltemi. Wind can be very gusty due to Evia's mountains (Mount Ochi, 1398m) creating turbulence.

Thermal southerly (SSE/S) also works some afternoons outside Meltemi episodes, offering gentler conditions.

Hazards

⚠️ The Kavo Doro passage is one of the most dangerous in the Aegean Sea with strong currents and cross-seas. Do not venture away from the protected zone in front of the beach! The Meltemi can be very gusty (10-knot variations) due to Evia's mountains. Rocks on the sides of the bay. In extreme Meltemi (>30 knots), conditions are for experts only. Strong coastal currents present.
