Overview

Pyrgaki is a spot on the south coast of Naxos, in a wilder and more isolated area of the island. The beach faces south/southwest, giving it a unique exposure on Naxos. The N/NNE Meltemi wraps around the southern tip of the island and arrives at Pyrgaki after changing direction, coming from NW/W cross-shore. Conditions are more technical than on the west coast, with potentially gustier wind after the island wrap-around. Pyrgaki offers a beautiful setting with sandy beaches and rock formations.

Pyrgaki works when the Meltemi is strong enough to wrap around the island effectively. NW/W cross-shore wind creates more technical conditions than the west coast. Open riding area to the south. No kite center — self-sufficient spot. Reserved for advanced riders able to handle gusty conditions. Works in July-August.

Clear water, 22-26°C. 2mm shorty. Sand/rock bottom. Moderate chop to waves. Current possible along the south coast.

Parking

Limited parking by the track to Pyrgaki. Decent access road from the interior road. A few tavernas in the area. Car essential.

Wind specificities

The Meltemi wraps around southern Naxos and arrives at Pyrgaki from NW/W cross-shore on this south-facing coast. Wind can be gusty (gusts and lulls) after passing over Naxos' mountains (Mt Zeus, 1004m). Typical strength of 15-22 knots, less reliable than the directly exposed west coast. Works best when the Meltemi is strong (25+ knots to the north) for effective wind crossing. Season mainly July-August.

Hazards

Gusty wind after island wrap-around — gusts and lulls. Isolated spot with no rescue. Rocks and rock formations. Current along the south coast. Southward drift potentially dangerous. Mandatory to sail with a partner. Reserved for experienced riders.
