Kamari kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
Greece
Overview
Kamari is a long black volcanic sand beach on the east coast of Santorini, at the foot of the imposing Mount Mesa Vouno (ancient Thera). This unique spectacular setting — black sand, volcanic cliff, turquoise waters — makes it one of the most photogenic kite spots in Greece. The N/NNE Meltemi arrives side-shore from the left on this east coast, offering rideable conditions in summer. The beach is also very touristy, requiring good management of cohabitation with swimmers.

Technical details of Kamari spot
The spot works with winds from N, NNE, NNW.
Spot functioning
Kamari works with the N/NNE Meltemi side-shore. The long black sand beach offers space but cohabitation with tourists is the main challenge — Kamari is one of Santorini's busiest beaches. Sail on less crowded sections. No dedicated kite center. Mount Mesa Vouno to the south creates a wind shadow zone — do not sail too close to the mountain.

On the water
Aegean Sea, 22-26°C. Lycra or shorty. Black volcanic sand bottom — very distinctive. Moderate chop in side-shore wind. Depth increasing quickly (volcanic beach).
Parking
Large parking at Kamari — well-equipped resort. Many spaces along the coastal road. Regular bus from Fira (capital). Easy access.
Wind specificities
The N/NNE Meltemi arrives side-shore from the left on Santorini's east coast. Mount Mesa Vouno (369m) south of Kamari can create turbulence and locally modify the wind. Typical strength of 15-22 knots in summer, sometimes less reliable than the central Cyclades (Naxos, Paros) as Santorini is at the south of the archipelago. Wind is generally lighter than Paros or Naxos. Season from June to September.
Hazards
Intense cohabitation with tourists, sunbeds, jet-skis. Side-shore wind can create drift. Possible turbulence near Mount Mesa Vouno. Depth increasing quickly. Strong sun exposure. No specialized kite rescue.
