Overview

Pukoo is a spot on the southeast coast of Molokai island, one of Hawaii's least developed islands. This spot offers an authentic and preserved experience, far from mass tourism. Northeast trade winds wrap around the eastern tip of Molokai and arrive from the east/east-northeast. The water is partially protected by the barrier reef that runs along Molokai's south coast — the longest barrier reef in the United States. Conditions are accessible for intermediate riders. Molokai is known for its authentic Hawaiian culture — respect local traditions.

On the water

Warm water year-round (24-27°C/75-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. The offshore barrier reef partially protects the area, creating a relatively calm inner lagoon. Moderate currents in reef channels. Water is shallow over large areas — watch out at low tide. Green sea turtles (honu) very common in these seagrass-rich waters.

Sharks (tiger sharks) present in Molokai waters. Humpback whales from December to April — 100 yards distance. Remote spot — limited rescue services on Molokai. Respect local culture — Molokai is proud of its Hawaiian authenticity.
