Overview

Pohaku Park sits on the northwest coast of Maui near Kapalua, on one of the most exposed sections of the island. This spot benefits from northeast trade winds that blow strongly across this exposed headland. Conditions are powerful with significant northwest ocean swell in winter, creating excellent wave riding opportunities. The spot is reserved for experienced riders due to swell exposure, strong currents, and rocky reef. Views across to Molokai island are spectacular.

On the water

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient for sun protection. The bottom is rocky with coral reef. Significant northwest swell in winter (October-March) creates excellent wave riding conditions but substantially increases difficulty. Strong currents along the coast, particularly with swell. Chop can be significant in strong winds.

Hazards

Shallow rocky reef — wear reef booties. Strong currents along the coast, particularly dangerous with winter swell. Powerful northwest swell in winter — reserved for experienced riders. Abundant sea urchins on the reef. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) present in the area. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Exposed rocks at low tide.
