Overview
Ironwood Beach sits on the northwest coast of Maui near Kapalua, named after the tall ironwood (casuarina) trees lining the shore. This spot is exposed to northeast trade winds and North Pacific swells, creating powerful conditions suited for advanced riders. Wind is consistent and sustained, blowing side-shore to side-onshore. On the water
Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra or rashguard is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocky reef. Northwest swell in winter (October-March) creates significant waves. Chop can be substantial in strong winds. Strong currents along the coast and around rocky headlands. Water is rougher than sheltered West Maui spots.
Hazards
Shallow rocky reef — wear reef booties. Strong currents along the coast, particularly dangerous with swell. Powerful northwest swell in winter — conditions reserved for experts. Abundant sea urchins on the reef. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) present in the northwest Maui area. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Exposed rocks at low tide.
