Overview

Happy Opu is a spot on Maui's west coast in the Honokowai/Kaanapali area, between the Kaanapali and Kapalua resorts. This amusingly named spot ("opu" means belly in Hawaiian) offers reliable afternoon wind conditions thanks to trade winds channeled around the West Maui Mountains. The water is semi-sheltered by the west coast, providing calmer conditions than the north shore. The spot suits intermediate riders and offers a magnificent setting with views of Molokai.

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. Water is relatively flat with moderate chop in strong winds. Moderate currents along the coast. Green sea turtles (honu) are frequently spotted in this area. Conditions similar to neighboring Honokowai and Embassy spots.

Hazards

Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present on the reef. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported in West Maui waters. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Tourist area — swimmers and snorkelers may be in the water.
