Freak Surf Crete

Freak Surf Crete is a windsurf and wingfoil station on Kouremenos Beach in Palekastro, eastern Crete. It was opened in 2004 by Hannes Unterweger (Austria) and Davina Payne (UK), who run it with an international team. The website highlights the consistent Meltemi wind from May to October and an enclosed bay with no risk of drifting offshore.

The station sits in the middle of a sandy bay, away from mass tourism, with a shaded area, beach shower, water and electricity. At least one crew member is always on bay watch, with a motorboat and jet ski for rescue. The team speaks English, French, Italian and German; yoga is offered on the beach.

Windsurf equipment: JP boards from 65 to 240 litres and Neil Pryde 2025 sails (1.5 to 7.7 m², carbon masts), kids equipment and windsurf foils. Wingfoil equipment: Ensis boards, foils and wings. Wetsuits, life jackets, helmets and harnesses are available for rent and free for guests taking lessons.

Wingfoil lessons for all levels (SUP wing introduction semi-private or private, beginner foil, advanced boat sessions, tow-in), equipment included, and windsurf lessons from beginner to expert. Equipment storage is available.

Open May to November, 10 am to 7 pm.
