Spain: an overview

Europe's kite capital

For many riders, Spain begins and ends in Tarifa. The southern tip of continental Europe, facing the mountains of Morocco, has become Europe's kitesurfing capital in around twenty years: a whole town lives by the wind, between schools, shops, van life and beach evenings. People come from all over the world, often for a week, sometimes for a lifetime.

But Spain is not just Tarifa. The Canary Islands are one of the world's great windsurfing and kiting scenes, with World Cup stops for decades. The Mediterranean, from Catalonia to Murcia, offers lagoons and sheltered bays, and very lively local communities.

Two winds that decide everything

In Tarifa, people don't talk about the weather, they talk about Levante and Poniente. The Levante, from the east, is powerful, warm and often gusty: it turns some beaches into experts-only territory. The Poniente, from the west, is cooler and steadier. Each beach works with one or the other, and the whole town moves according to which one is blowing.

In the Canaries, the trade winds run the show, accelerating between the islands and along the volcanic relief. In Catalonia, the tramontane comes down from the Pyrenees. Three regions, three wind cultures.

Riding regulated in summer

On busy beaches, especially around Tarifa, the bathing season limits riding to marked zones. Out of season, the beaches empty — and that is often when Spain is at its most beautiful.

The best regions

Tarifa and the Strait of Gibraltar

The epicentre. Huge beaches, dunes, Africa on the horizon and a whole town devoted to the wind. Busy, cosmopolitan, unmissable.

The Costa de la Luz

Northwest of Tarifa, surf villages, pine forests and cliffs, from Caños de Meca to El Palmar. Wilder and quieter, with waves as soon as the ocean wakes up.

Fuerteventura

The island of wind. Giant lagoons, protected dunes and white sand beaches, in an almost Saharan Atlantic light. A top winter destination.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria

Volcanic islands where the trade winds speed up between the peaks. Legendary wave and speed spots, and a mild climate all year.

The Costa Brava and the Empordà

At the foot of the Pyrenees, the Bay of Roses and its beaches lined with protected marshes. The tramontane brings powerful sessions in a Catalan countryside setting.

The Ebro Delta and eastern Spain

Lagoons, rice fields and shallow bays, all the way to the Mar Menor in Murcia. Flat, warm water, perfect for learning and for wing foiling.

Good to know

Levante and Poniente: in Tarifa, each beach works with one wind or the other. The Levante can be very gusty; schools and locals know which beach to choose.
Bathing season: in summer, on busy beaches, riding is limited to marked zones. Rules vary from one municipality to the next.
Natural parks: the Corralejo dunes, the Empordà marshes and the Ebro Delta are protected. Access and riding there are regulated.
Canary Islands: you can ride all year; at Sotavento, the tide governs the lagoon.
Cool water: around the Strait of Gibraltar, the Atlantic stays colder than you might expect. A wetsuit is often needed, even in the sun.
