Overview

The Bay of Roses is immense and benefits from wind patterns that are truly perfect for water sports. At this location, the Mediterranean Sea is turquoise and bordered by a very large sandy beach. The entire bay is lined with campsites and in summer it quickly becomes very popular.
But from what we've observed, the kite zones are well organized and cohabitation works well.
The great strength of the San Pere spot (also called Roses) is the wind patterns, especially the thermal wind that blows every day when the weather wind is absent.

On the water, stay within the exit channel between the yellow buoys - this is the condition for this kind of spot to remain open in summer. Once offshore, it's open bar.
In winter, there are no yellow buoys, the entire beach is available.

Spot opening date

Ouvert toute l'année

Spot open all year round but reduced zones in summer.

Parking

The parking is located right at the edge of the spot after a short stretch of track (very well maintained). It's large, but there are no facilities available (like showers or toilets), but 500m to the south you'll find everything you need (at least during high season)

Hazards

No particular dangers on the spot. However, be careful in tramontana conditions, the wind can be really violent, don't overestimate yourself. Depending on conditions, the shorebreak can also be devastating.

Wind specificities

THE WINDS OF SANT PERE PESCADOR
The best months are from April to October, when thermal winds predominate, ideal for learning and progressing; During the cold months, the famous Tramuntana (strong north wind) is present for the enjoyment of expert kitesurfers.
Before navigating, always check the forecasts and, if it's your first time riding on this beach, ask the local kiters.
Thermal wind (marinade): from April to October
When this situation occurs, there is no wind early in the morning and the place is ideal for practicing stand up paddle (SUP).
The breeze gradually builds up and the first winds are ideal for beginners in windsurfing, wingfoil and for children.
Around noon and in the afternoon, the thermal wind is laminar and constant from SE at 12 to 18/20 knots (on-shore on the right side).
The sea forms a short chop and there can be small fun waves on the shore for surfing.
Keep in mind that this thermal wind is not taken into account in forecasts (windguru, windfinder...), so you need to add about 5 additional knots to the forecast.
Tramuntana (Tramontagne):
When this situation occurs, the wind blows day and night.
It's a strong or very strong wind that blows from the north or northwest (side or side-off shore from the left side), so it can be gusty, especially near the shore. It can range from 18/20 knots to 30/35 and more.
The water near the shore is very flat, where you can make good cuts, and further out there are small ramp-shaped waves ideal for jumping.
Although it's a wind that blows mainly during winter, it also blows the rest of the year. If it's hot, it may happen that, at the hottest time of the day, the tramuntana decreases and becomes more gusty, because the thermal wind wants to enter and, coming from opposite directions, a "wind battle" occurs.
It should be noted that the Tramuntana, when forecast at 18/20 knots, is usually stronger than predicted.
Garbí:
This wind usually appears under the forecasts, starting with a common SE thermal and quickly rolling to S-SW.
You can notice its entry by the change in wind temperature, which becomes much warmer.
Like the Tramuntana, having somewhat of a land component, the wind is usually gusty on the shore.
When it enters, it blows between 15 and 20/25 knots.
Levante:
The typical Levante situation usually brings rain and medium or large waves creating stronger currents.
This wind makes its presence felt especially in autumn and winter and makes surfers happy in the Mediterranean ;-)
In summer, it can happen that the thermal wind turns a bit to the east, but without waves or rain. When turning from SE to E (onshore), navigation will be parallel to the beach.
