Kos | Masticharic1 kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
Greece
Overview
Mastichari is the main kitesurfing spot on the north coast of Kos, facing the island of Kalymnos. This small fishing port and seaside resort benefits from direct exposure to the Meltemi blowing from the north, creating perfect onshore to side-onshore conditions. The sandy beach extends west of the port with shallow water over a large area, ideal for learning kitesurfing. The spot is one of the most reliable on Kos for wind, thanks to the Venturi effect between Kos and Kalymnos that accelerates the Meltemi.

The spot works with winds from N, NNE, WNW, NW, NNW.
Spot functioning
Mastichari works with direct Meltemi from the north, onshore to side-onshore on this north coast. The riding area west of the port offers a wide sailing space. Shallow water for the first 50-100 meters creates a safe zone for beginners and lessons. Further out, chop increases with fetch from Kalymnos. Kite schools operate on the main beach. The ferry to Kalymnos departs from the port — watch for the ferry navigation zone.

On the water
Aegean Sea water between Kos and Kalymnos, 22-26°C in summer. 2mm shorty or lycra in peak season. Sandy bottom, very shallow water over a large distance from shore. Moderate to strong chop depending on Meltemi strength — the fetch from Kalymnos creates short waves. Moderate current parallel to the coast toward the east.
Parking
Free parking near Mastichari beach. Several parking areas along the coastal road west of the port. In high season, the closest spots to the beach fill up quickly — plan to arrive early. Mastichari village offers additional parking a few minutes walk away.
Wind specificities
Mastichari is perfectly exposed to the Meltemi blowing from N/NNW on the north coast of Kos. The Venturi effect created by the channel between Kos and Kalymnos (only 10km apart) significantly accelerates the wind, making Mastichari one of the windiest spots on the island. Typical strength of 18-28 knots in summer, with gusts up to 35 knots during strong episodes. Wind is onshore to side-onshore (NNW/N), ensuring safety. Wind builds around 11am-noon, peaks in afternoon. Reliable season from mid-June to mid-September.
Hazards
Ferry navigation zone for Kos-Kalymnos route must be strictly avoided (to the east, near the port). Meltemi can reach 30-35 knots in gusts — adapt kite size. Short choppy waves when wind is strong, tiring for beginners. Lateral current toward the east. Strong heat and sun in summer — hydration and sun protection essential. Some sea urchins on the bottom in certain areas.
