Mastichari South / Kos kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
Greece
Overview
Mastichari South is a spot on the south coast of Kos, opposite side from Mastichari on the north coast. This spot receives the Meltemi after it wraps around the western tip of the island, arriving cross-shore to side-offshore from NW/W. Conditions are more technical than on the north coast, with chop and waves generated by the open fetch to the south. The spot is less crowded and offers a wilder setting, aimed at advanced riders able to handle cross-offshore wind conditions.

Technical details of Mastichari South / Kos spot
The spot works with winds from N, W, WNW, NW, NNW.
Spot functioning
Mastichari South works when the Meltemi is strong enough to cross the island effectively (18+ knots). Cross-shore to side-offshore NW/W wind requires good upwind technique. The riding area is open to the south with fetch generating chop and waves. No schools or rescue on site — sail with partners. The spot offers a wild riding area away from the north coast crowds. Best with strong, stable Meltemi.

On the water
Aegean Sea south side, 22-26°C in summer. 2mm shorty sufficient. Mixed sand/rock bottom. Chop to moderate waves (0.5-1.5m) depending on wind strength, with open fetch to the south. Deeper water more quickly than on the north coast. Current along the coast.
Parking
Limited parking along the track to the south coast. Access via secondary roads from the island interior. Unimproved terrain — suitable vehicle recommended. Few facilities — bring water, food, and all necessities.
Wind specificities
The Meltemi wraps around the western tip of Kos and arrives at Mastichari South from NW/W, creating cross-shore to side-offshore conditions on this south-facing coast. Wind can be disturbed by the island crossing, generating gusts and lulls. Typical strength of 15-25 knots in summer, but less consistent than on the directly exposed north coast. When Meltemi is strong (25+ knots), wind crosses the island well and conditions are powerful. The side-offshore nature makes this spot more dangerous — reserved for riders who can ride upwind.
Hazards
Side-offshore wind component — risk of being carried out to sea in case of trouble. Isolated spot with no rescue nearby — never sail alone. Wind can be gusty (gusts/lulls) after crossing over the island. Rocky bottom in some areas. Current along the coast. No services or supervision — total self-sufficiency required. Reserved for experienced riders.
