On the water

Flat to choppy water on Pamlico Sound. The proximity to Hatteras Inlet creates tidal currents that can be significant. Depth varies and can be greater than at soundside spots further north. Chop possible in strong wind or when ferries pass. The body of water is wide and offers space, but be careful to stay clear of the ferry navigation channel.

Hazards

Significant tidal currents due to proximity to Hatteras Inlet — risk of being pulled toward the inlet and ocean. Boat traffic: ferries, fishing boats and pleasure craft — stay clear of the navigation channel. Stingrays in shallow water. Sea nettles (jellyfish) in summer. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer. Do not ride toward the inlet — currents there are extremely dangerous.
