Overview

Hatteras Inlet is located at the northern tip of Ocracoke Island, facing Hatteras Village (accessible by ferry). This spot is at the mouth of the inlet separating Hatteras Island from Ocracoke Island, connecting Pamlico Sound to the Atlantic Ocean. The spot is advanced due to powerful tidal currents through the inlet. The area offers unique conditions with shifting sandbars and changing currents. Only very experienced riders with knowledge of local currents should ride here.

Waters influenced by tidal currents through the inlet. Shifting sandbars creating shallow areas and deeper channels. Conditions change dramatically with the tide. At low tide, vast sandbars emerge. Water can go from flat to very choppy depending on currents. Fascinating but dangerous zone for experienced riders.

Hazards

Extremely powerful tidal currents — risk of being pulled into the inlet and toward the ocean. NEVER ride in the inlet channel. Shifting sandbars — topography changes constantly. Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry traffic and fishing boats. Sharks frequent in the inlet area. Stingrays. Spot reserved for experts with knowledge of local currents. Ride with a buddy and inform someone of your session.
