The Bath House / Hatteras kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
United States · Caroline du Nord
Overview
The Bath House is a soundside spot located in Frisco on Hatteras Island, along the Pamlico Sound. The spot gets its name from an old bath house building nearby. It's a popular access point for kitesurfers seeking the flat water conditions of Pamlico Sound. The water is ultra-shallow (2-5 feet for several hundred meters), making it ideal for learning and progression. The bottom is sandy with some seagrass patches. The spot is well oriented for the thermal SW winds that blow regularly in summer afternoons.

On the water
Flat to slightly choppy water on Pamlico Sound — ideal conditions for freestyle and learning. Very shallow depth, you can stand everywhere over a large area. Bottom is mainly sandy with seagrass patches. Small chop possible in strong NE wind. Water is warm in summer (78-86°F) and the body of water is very large, offering plenty of space.
Hazards
Stingrays present in warm shallow waters — do the stingray shuffle when walking. Sea nettles (jellyfish) common from June to September. Sharp oyster shells in some areas — water shoes recommended. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer with lightning risk — exit the water immediately. In strong NE wind, the sound can partially drain, exposing bottom areas.
