On the water

Flat water on Pamlico Sound — excellent for freestyle, freeride and learning. Very shallow depth, you can stand for a long distance. Sandy bottom with some seagrass patches. Consistent and predictable conditions. In thermal SW wind (most common in summer), wind comes from the sound and conditions are perfectly flat.

Hazards

Stingrays in shallow water — do the stingray shuffle. Sea nettles (jellyfish) common in summer. Sharp oyster shells possible — wear water shoes. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer with lightning risk. Proximity to NC Highway 12 — watch for traffic when carrying gear. In strong NE wind, water level can drop significantly.
