Spot de Pounda / Paros

Pounda / Paros kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot

Overview

Pounda is THE most famous kitesurfing spot on Paros, located on the west coast facing Antiparos island. The narrow strait between Paros and Antiparos (about 1km) creates a spectacular Venturi effect that accelerates the N/NNE Meltemi, making it one of the windiest spots in the Cyclades. Water between the two islands is shallow and flat, creating a natural lagoon perfect for kitesurfing of all levels. Pounda is a major kite hub in Greece with several professional schools and an international atmosphere. The spot is also the departure point for the Antiparos ferry.

Technical details of Pounda / Paros spot

Spot currently open :-)
Spot functioning

Pounda works with the N/NNE Meltemi channeled through the strait. The shallow lagoon (50cm-1.5m over hundreds of meters) between Paros and Antiparos creates an exceptional flat water area. Several professional kite schools share the zone with lessons, rental, and storage. Navigation area separated from swimmers and the ferry. Beginners ride in the lagoon, advanced riders in the main channel. Watch for the Paros-Antiparos ferry zone. Works from June to September, almost daily.

On the water

Crystal clear turquoise lagoon water, 22-26°C in summer. Lycra often sufficient, 2mm shorty if needed. Sandy bottom, very shallow water in the lagoon (50cm-1.5m). Flat water in the protected zone, chop in the channel between the islands. Ideal conditions for learning in the lagoon.

Parking

Large parking near the Pounda ferry port. Kite school parking available to students. Roadside spaces. Access from Parikia (Paros capital) in about 15 min. Bus available in season. The spot is well served and equipped.

Wind specificities

The N/NNE Meltemi is spectacularly channeled and accelerated in the Paros-Antiparos strait. The Venturi effect can double wind strength: when it blows 15 knots in open sea, Pounda gets 25-30 knots. Typical strength of 20-35 knots in summer, among the windiest conditions in the entire Mediterranean. Wind arrives side-shore to side-onshore on this west coast. Building at 11am, phenomenal peak in afternoon (2pm-6pm). Extremely reliable season from June to September — series of 5-10 consecutive Meltemi days are common in July-August. One of the 3 windiest spots in Greece along with Karpathos and the Rhodes corridor.

Hazards

VERY strong wind that can exceed 35 knots — must adapt kite size (7-9m often necessary). Paros-Antiparos ferry zone must be strictly avoided. Current in the channel between the islands. High kiter traffic in peak season — watch for collisions. Sea urchins possible in the lagoon. Strong sun and water reflection — double sun protection recommended.
