Overview

Lake Silvaplana has been a kitesurfing spot since the beginning of the sport (and even before with snowkiting). The area is surrounded by mountains and the landscapes are breathtaking. If you enjoy hiking or mountain biking, it's an ideal place to mix sports, knowing that the wind usually picks up late morning or early afternoon.

The spot is on a grassy beach and very easy to access, however, be aware that the lake is a very popular spot and can get crowded on weekends and during holidays. Plan to bring a full wetsuit, as the water is cold, and larger kites because with the altitude, you'll need more sail area to get moving.

There is a campsite at the spot, and wild camping is not tolerated in the region (business is business). Overall, the region is quite expensive.

  • You are a certified kitesurfer with VDWS level 4 or IKO level 3J.

Wind specificities
The wind on Lake Silvaplana is thermal and comes from the southwest through the Maloja Pass. 
The thermal wind works as long as the weather is good and there is no northerly wind trend.
The north wind is often irregular and not really rideable (wing and windsurf might be okay).

Due to the altitude of the lake (1790m), the wind is much less dense, so you'll need more sail area. Follow the locals' lead when choosing your kite size.
Hazards
The water is quite cold in all seasons, so equip yourself properly. Crowds are also a potential danger, don't hesitate to do a few runs to position yourself above the masses.
