Australia: an overview

A country facing the ocean

In Australia, life happens by the water. Almost the whole population lives on the coast, and beach culture — surfing, swimming, lifesaving — is an institution. Windsurfing, then kiting and wing foiling, settled in naturally, with a large community relative to the population and a high technical standard.

Western Australia is its beating heart. Every southern summer, a remarkably reliable sea breeze builds in the afternoon along the coast: locals call it the "Fremantle Doctor". It makes Perth and its region one of the windiest destinations on the planet, drawing riders from all over the world every year.

Cities and the bush

What stands out is how close the big cities are to the spots. In Melbourne, you ride on Port Phillip Bay with the skyline behind you; in Sydney, between the northern wave beaches and the sheltered waters of Pittwater. Yet a few hours' drive is enough to find empty beaches, reefs and fishing villages where you ride almost alone.

An environment to respect

The Australian ocean is magnificent and demanding. Extremely strong sun, shallow reefs, marine wildlife, currents: local riders take all of this very seriously, and visitors would do well to follow suit.

The best regions

New South Wales

Sydney and its surroundings: wave beaches, sheltered bays and lagoons, in a city where the ocean is part of everyday life.

Queensland

Warm water, sand islands and shallow bays around Brisbane. Further north, the tropics and the Great Barrier Reef.

Good to know

  • Reversed seasons: in the southern hemisphere, summer — November to March — is the main wind season in Western Australia.
  • Sun: the UV index is extreme. A rash vest, sunscreen and a hat are essential, even on cloudy days.
  • Reefs: many spots, especially in the west, have shallow reefs. Booties are strongly recommended.
  • Marine wildlife: sharks, jellyfish and, in the tropical northern waters, stingers in season. Local advice and beach flags are the authority.
  • Regulated zones: city beaches and the areas around airports, such as Botany Bay, have specific riding zones.
  • Distances: changing region is like changing country. Many riders pick one coast per trip.
