Portugal: an overview

A surf nation that opened up to the wind

Portugal first made its name through its waves. Nazaré, Peniche, Ericeira: surf culture runs deep here, and it paved the way for the other board sports. Kiting, windsurfing and, more recently, wing foiling have grown fast, driven by a mild climate, a very varied coast and schools set up all along the shoreline.

The atmosphere is special: relaxed and cosmopolitan, with riders from all over Europe sharing the spots with surfers and Portuguese families. And you are never far from a small historic town, a fish market or a terrace facing the ocean.

The Nortada and the lagoons

In summer, a north wind blows steadily along the coast, especially in the afternoon: the Nortada. It makes Portugal a reliable destination from May to September, and it has one consequence worth knowing: by drawing up deep water, it keeps the ocean cold in the middle of summer.

The country's great asset is its lagoons. Óbidos, Aveiro, Alvor, the Ria Formosa: set back from the ocean and sheltered by sand bars, they offer flat, shallow water where you can learn safely, a few minutes from the wave beaches.

From the Minho to the Algarve

From the green north to the sunny south, the country changes face. The north offers estuaries and a wilder atmosphere, the Lisbon region powerful spots at the foot of the Sintra hills, and the Algarve warmer water and unspoilt lagoons.

Estuaries, pine forests and a green coast. Viana do Castelo is the reference, with flat water sheltered by the pier and waves right next door.

The Silver Coast and Aveiro

A vast lagoon system, fishing villages with striped houses and very large flat-water areas.

Óbidos and Peniche

A big learning lagoon and, close by, Portugal's surf capital. Two atmospheres a few kilometres apart.

Lisbon and Cascais

Guincho and its powerful waves at the foot of the Sintra hills, and the Costa da Caparica south of the Tagus. Sporty spots within reach of the capital.

The Algarve

The south of the country, warmer and sunnier. Estuaries, lagoons, golden cliffs and the southwestern tip of Europe around Sagres.

Good to know

Nortada: the north wind blows mostly in the afternoon, from May to September. Mornings are often calm.
Cold ocean: the Nortada draws up deep water; the Atlantic stays cool even in summer. A wetsuit is needed almost all year.
Tides and lagoons: Óbidos, Aveiro, Alvor and the Ria Formosa are ridden according to the tide, with currents at the inlets.
Bathing season: in summer, riding is regulated near lifeguarded swimming areas.
Sharing with surfers: many wave spots are shared with surfers. Respect the zones and priorities.
Natural parks: the Ria Formosa, the Sintra-Cascais park and the Costa da Caparica cliffs are protected.
