Italy: an overview

Lakes and islands

Italian board sports have two faces. In the north, the great alpine lakes — Lake Garda first and foremost — have been one of the world's windsurfing hotspots since the 1980s, and later for kiting and wing foiling. In the south, Sardinia, Sicily and Calabria offer a warm Mediterranean, flat lagoons and crystal-clear coves.

Between the two, the culture is the same: a deep-rooted passion, plenty of schools, and a way of life in which a day on the water almost always ends around a table.

Wind on schedule

Lake Garda is famous for a phenomenon almost unique in Europe. At night and in the morning, the Pelèr blows down from the north; by late morning it drops, and the Ora comes up from the south until evening. This clockwork alternation has made the lake a venue for international championships and an unbeatable training ground. Lake Como follows the same rhythm, with its own winds.

In the south, the mistral, the sirocco and thermal breezes set the pace of a season that is very long in Sicily and Sardinia.

Regulated riding

On the lakes, kiting is strictly regulated: zones, hours, sometimes boat access. On the beaches in summer, you reach the water through marked launch corridors across the swimming areas. Precise rules, but ones that let board sports thrive among the holidaymakers.

The best regions

Lake Garda

A mountain fjord between the Alps and the Dolomites, running on the Pelèr and the Ora. The historic cradle of Italian windsurfing, and a top destination for kiting and wing foiling.

Lake Como

At the northern end of the lake, between mountains plunging into the water, villages where the afternoon thermal sustains a small, loyal community.

Sardinia

Turquoise water, archipelagos, lagoons and the mistral. From the Strait of Bonifacio to the southwest of the island, an exceptional variety of spots.

Western Sicily

Around Marsala and Trapani, shallow lagoons, salt pans and one of the longest wind seasons in Italy.

Calabria and the Strait of Messina

Facing Etna and Sicily, a coast where thermal winds accelerate between two seas. Powerful, spectacular spots.

Apulia and Salento

The heel of the boot, between the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea. Nature reserves, watchtowers and wild beaches.

The Tuscan coast

The Maremma and Argentario, medieval villages and lagoons, a few hours from Rome and Florence.

Good to know

  • Lakes: kiting is strictly regulated by each municipality — zones, hours, sometimes boat access. Windsurfing and wing foiling are generally freer.
  • Launch corridors: in summer, on the beaches, you reach the water through marked corridors across the swimming areas.
  • Marine protected areas: the La Maddalena archipelago, Tavolara and the Apulian reserves have their own riding rules.
  • Seasons: the lakes come alive mainly from spring to autumn; southern Italy offers a much longer season.
  • Water temperature: warm in summer in the south, noticeably cooler on the alpine lakes.
