Overview

25 Mile Creek Park is a kitesurfing spot on Lake Chelan, a deep and narrow glacial lake nestled in Washington State's Cascade Mountains at 333 meters altitude. Lake Chelan is the third deepest lake in the United States (458 meters) and stretches 88 km through an enclosed valley. Thermal winds are channeled through the narrow valley, creating powerful conditions. The mountain setting is spectacular with conifer forests and snow-capped peaks.

On the water

Fresh mountain water, cool to cold (10-18°C in summer depending on depth). 3/2 to 4/3 wetsuit recommended. The lake is deep (458m maximum) with a bottom that drops rapidly from shore. Thermal winds are channeled through the valley, blowing from the southeast at 15-25 knots in summer. The water can be rough with short chop and small waves in strong wind. The lake is narrow, limiting lateral riding space.

Hazards

Narrow and deep lake: drifting to the opposite shore means steep cliffs with no access. Very cold water, especially at depth: rapid hypothermia in case of incident. Valley winds can be very gusty with violent gusts caused by terrain. Recreational boat and water taxi traffic on the lake. Mountain storms can arrive quickly. Isolated spot with limited rescue services. Deep bottom: no possibility of standing.
