Overview

Steamboat Rock State Park is a kitesurfing spot on Banks Lake in central-eastern Washington State, at 474m elevation. This spectacular reservoir occupies the ancient Columbia River bed (Grand Coulee) with its imposing basalt cliffs and the Steamboat Rock monolith. The lake offers a vast body of water with excellent flat water conditions. Thermal winds channeled through the coulee corridor are consistent in summer. Unique geological setting and popular state park with camping.

Banks Lake with fresh water. Pleasant temperature in summer (18-23°C/64-73°F). Shorty to 3/2mm wetsuit in summer. Excellent flat water — one of the best flat water spots in the state. No significant current. Sandy to rocky bottom. Vast open body of water.

Hazards

Intense summer heat in the Columbia Basin desert. Thermal winds with gusts. Basalt cliffs nearby — stay on the water. Summer thunderstorms possible with lightning. State park — Discover Pass required. Rattlesnakes on the shores. Recreational boat traffic in summer.
