Overview

Virginia Beach 1st Street Jetty is a kitesurfing spot near the Rudee Inlet jetty, at the south end of the Virginia Beach boardwalk. This advanced spot combines ocean conditions with strong Rudee Inlet currents. The jetty creates a reference point and can generate interesting waves. Virginia Beach is the main kitesurfing spot on the Virginia coast, benefiting from regular northeast (nor'easters) and southeast winds. The Hampton Roads kite community is active here.

On the water

Atlantic Ocean with waves and swell. Strong currents near Rudee Inlet. Waves refracted by the jetty creating complex conditions. Excellent surf conditions in northeast swell. Sandy bottom. Cool water in spring and fall, warm in summer. Wetsuit recommended October to May.

Hazards

Strong Rudee Inlet currents that can sweep riders. Jetty rocks — maintain safe distance. Very numerous swimmers in summer along the boardwalk. Boat traffic in the inlet. Kitesurfing restrictions in summer in the boardwalk zone. Nor'easters can bring very strong winds and rough seas.
