Olifants River Mouth (Elephant River) is a spot on the west coast of the Western Cape, where one of the region's longest rivers meets the Atlantic. The estuary offers sheltered flat water conditions, while the ocean coastline is exposed to Atlantic swell. The setting is spectacular and wild, in an area of preserved nature.

Access via the R363 or tracks from the N7. Parking on natural ground near the mouth. Isolated area with few services.
Wind specificities
The dominant summer wind is south to south-east, side-onshore on this west-facing coast. Regular winds of 15-25 knots in the afternoon. The estuary can channel or attenuate the wind depending on configuration. The flat coastal terrain provides unobstructed wind.
Hazards
Strong current at the mouth, especially on outgoing tide. Very cold water on the ocean side. Isolated spot with no rescue. Powerful waves on the Atlantic side. Sharks present. Don't sail alone.
