Overview

Kommetjie is a surf and kite spot on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula, south of Noordhoek. This coastal village is known for its powerful reef waves and committed conditions. The south-easterly Cape Doctor blows side-offshore, offering technical wave riding conditions. The main spot is the Long Beach reef break, but several other reef spots are accessible along the coast. Kommetjie is a stronghold of South African surfing, with a strong local community.

Parking

Parking at Kommetjie Long Beach, access via Kommetjie Road. Free but limited parking. Restaurants and shops in the village. Watch for car break-ins.

Wind specificities

SE Cape Doctor in side-offshore. Wind blows 15 to 35 knots from October to March. The offshore component cleans up waves and creates optimal wave riding conditions. Wind can be gusty due to the terrain.

Hazards

Powerful waves on reef. Shallow rocky reef. Dense kelp. Strong currents. Very cold water. Sharks (area known for great whites, especially around Duiker Island). Offshore wind that can push out to sea. Shared spot with surfers (tensions possible).
