Overview

Noordhoek Beach is a massive 8 km sandy beach, one of the longest and wildest on the Cape Peninsula. Located at the foot of Chapman's Peak, this west-facing beach takes the full brunt of South Atlantic swells. The south-easterly Cape Doctor blows offshore to side-offshore, creating smooth but demanding conditions as the wind pushes out to sea. Noordhoek is renowned for its big waves and committed conditions. The beach is stunning, wild and rarely visited by kiters.

On the water

Cold Atlantic water (10-14°C, colder than Blouberg), 5/3 wetsuit recommended. Big waves (1-4 m). Sandy bottom. Strong currents, including rip currents. Kelp on edges. Smooth water surface thanks to offshore wind.

Parking

Parking at the north end of the beach (Chapman's Peak side) or south (Kommetjie side). The beach is long — plan your access point. Little infrastructure. Don't leave valuables — frequent theft.

Wind specificities

SE Cape Doctor offshore to side-offshore on this west-facing beach. The wind is accelerated passing over Chapman's Peak and can be gusty and turbulent. Strength of 15 to 40 knots from October to March. Technical conditions due to the dominant offshore component.

Hazards

Strong offshore wind — major risk of drifting out to sea. Big waves and powerful shore break. Strong currents (rip currents). Very cold water (10-14°C). Isolated beach without lifeguards. Sharks (area known for great white shark presence). Frequent car theft. Never ride alone.
