Spot de Koh Phangan - Ban Tai

Koh Phangan - Ban Tai

Koh Phangan - Ban Tai

Overview

Ban Tai on Koh Phangan is widely regarded as one of the best kitesurfing spots in Thailand, particularly for beginners and intermediate riders. Located on the south coast of this famous Gulf island, Ban Tai features a huge shallow lagoon of butter-flat water protected by an offshore reef, creating an incredibly safe and forgiving learning environment. The shallow water rarely exceeds waist depth for hundreds of meters, allowing riders to stand up after falls - a dream scenario for those learning to kite.

The primary kitesurfing season runs from January to April when consistent northeast winds blow at 9-20 knots, with stronger days pushing into the upper range. This period coincides with the dry season, offering sunny skies and warm temperatures. A secondary season from June to September brings monsoon winds of 10-25 knots, though conditions are less predictable and often accompanied by rain.

Several well-known kite schools operate at Ban Tai, including Siam Pro Kite and Accrokite, offering IKO-certified instruction. The shallow lagoon has become a hotspot for kite foiling and wingfoiling in recent years, as the flat water and consistent breeze create perfect conditions for foil riding. The spot is also excellent for freestyle practice thanks to the flat water surface.

Koh Phangan itself is famous for its Full Moon Party and vibrant backpacker culture, but the kitesurfing scene brings a different crowd - active, adventure-seeking travelers who appreciate the island's natural beauty combined with world-class wind conditions. Accommodation ranges from budget bungalows to luxury beachfront resorts, all within easy reach of the kite beach.
