Lo Stagnone di Marsala is one of the most famous kitesurfing spots in the world. This shallow lagoon (50 cm to 1.5 m) extends between the coast of Marsala and the Stagnone islands, including the famous island of Mozia with its Phoenician ruins. The ultra-flat water and shallow depth make it a paradise for beginners and freestyle. In summer, the Maestrale (northwest) thermal wind blows regularly in the afternoon between 15 and 25 knots. The setting is exceptional: turquoise waters, pink salt pans, historic windmills and spectacular sunsets over the Egadi islands. Many kite schools are located along the lagoon, making Lo Stagnone a must-visit destination for learning kitesurfing in the Mediterranean.

The Maestrale (NW) thermal wind is the most frequent in summer. It blows cross-shore relative to the lagoon, offering ideal conditions for sailing. In Sirocco (SE), the wind enters the lagoon from the sea side, creating more chop but still rideable conditions thanks to the shallow depth.

Ultra-flat water in the lagoon, depth between 50 cm and 1.5 m depending on the area. The bottom is sandy with some posidonia seagrass areas. The water is warm in summer (25-28°C). Ideal conditions for freestyle and learning. Shorty wetsuit or lycra sufficient from June to September.
Several parking areas are available along the SP21 road (Contrada Birgi) which runs alongside the lagoon. Kite schools generally have their own parking reserved for students. In high season (July-August), parking can be difficult and some parking areas become paid (5-10 euros/day). It is advisable to arrive early in summer.
The Maestrale (NW) is the dominant wind in summer, blowing from May to September with a strong thermal component in the afternoon. It sets in between 12pm and 2pm and can blow until sunset with 15-25 knots. The Sirocco (SE) blows mainly in spring and autumn, bringing more demanding conditions with chop in the lagoon.
The lagoon is generally very safe thanks to its shallow depth. However, watch out for wooden stakes from the old salt pans which can be just below the surface. Sea urchins are present in places: neoprene booties are recommended. In strong Sirocco wind, the water can become choppy. In summer, the heat is intense: bring sunscreen and hydration.
