Overview

Ewa Beach is a spot on Oahu's south-southwest coast, west of Pearl Harbor. This residential neighborhood offers access to relatively calm water on the leeward coast. Northeast trade winds cross the island and arrive from the east/east-northeast, sometimes attenuated by the overland passage. The offshore reef partially protects the area, creating a navigable inner lagoon. Conditions are accessible for intermediate riders. The spot is less windy than the windward coast but offers reliable afternoon sessions.

On the water

Warm water year-round (24-27°C/75-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. The offshore reef creates a relatively flat inner lagoon. Water is shallow over large areas at low tide. Moderate currents. Wind may be lighter and less consistent than on the windward coast due to the island's sheltering effect.

Hazards

Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Very shallow at low tide — risk of grounding on reef. Sea urchins present. Proximity to Pearl Harbor naval base — respect military exclusion zones. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Wind sometimes inconsistent on this leeward coast.
