Kahala is a spot on Oahu's south coast, just east of Diamond Head in the upscale Kahala residential neighborhood. Northeast trade winds cross the Ko'olau mountain range and arrive from the east/east-northeast on this leeward coast. The spot offers a semi-sheltered water area with accessible conditions in moderate winds. The offshore reef creates a relatively flat water zone. The setting is peaceful and residential, away from the bustle of nearby Waikiki.

On the water

Warm water year-round (24-27°C/75-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. The offshore reef provides partial protection from swells, creating a relatively flat lagoon. Moderate currents in reef channels. Green sea turtles (honu) frequently present. The area is shallow at low tide.

Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported off Oahu's south coast. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Quiet residential area — respect the neighbors.
