On the water

Fresh water from the Columbia River, cool to temperate (13-19°C in summer). 3/2 to 4/3 wetsuit recommended. Moderate river current at this point. Moderate chop created by thermal wind against current. Westerly thermal winds at 18-30 knots in summer, can be gustier than in the gorge core. The river is wide in this section, offering a spacious waterway.

Hazards

River current that can carry riders downstream. Frequent barges and commercial traffic on the Columbia River. Winds can be gusty and irregular in this transition zone. The Dalles Dam downstream creates dangerous currents: respect exclusion zones. Railroad tracks along the shore. Recreational boat traffic near the urban park.
