On the water

Fresh water from the Columbia River, cool (12-18°C in summer). 3/2 to 4/3 wetsuit recommended. The sandbar provides a shallow area for standing. Constant river current at 3-5 km/h, accentuated by the Klickitat River inflow. Short chop typical of the Gorge. Westerly thermal winds at 20-35 knots from May to September. The water offers varied conditions between the sandbar and the main channel.

Hazards

River current reinforced by the Klickitat River inflow at the mouth. Barges and commercial traffic on the Columbia River: stay out of the channel. Thermal winds can ramp up quickly to 40+ knots. The sandbar can create very shallow areas dangerous for foils. Railroad tracks along the shore. Cold water risking hypothermia. Additional currents at the confluence of the two waterways.
