On the water

Cold water (10-15°C), 4/3 wetsuit recommended in summer, 5/3 in winter. Mix of saltwater and fresh water from the Siletz River. Shallow waters with sandy and muddy bottom. No ocean waves in the bay, flat to slightly choppy surface. Significant tidal currents in the main channels, especially on outgoing tide. The waterway shrinks considerably at low tide, exposing large mudflats.

Hazards

Tidal currents in the main channels that can carry riders toward the ocean. Shifting sandbars and mudflats creating unpredictable areas. At low tide, the waterway is very reduced with shallow bottoms. Be careful not to drift toward the mouth and open ocean. Cold water that can cause hypothermia. Fishing and boating zones to respect. Small boat traffic in the bay.
