Overview

Whale Park is a spot on Maui's south coast in the Kihei area, named after the humpback whales that migrate to the waters off Maui each winter. The park offers an exceptional whale watching vantage point from December to April. Northeast trade winds are channeled and accelerated by Haleakala, creating reliable afternoon thermal conditions. The spot offers accessible conditions for intermediate riders, with moderately choppy water typical of the Kihei coast.

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. Water is moderately choppy in strong winds. Moderate lateral currents. Conditions similar to neighboring Kihei spots (Kamaole, Maui Sunset, Typhoon Lagoon). Humpback whales very close to shore in winter — incredible spectacle but legal distances must be maintained.

Hazards

Humpback whales very close to shore from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards (90 m) distance. Be particularly vigilant in this area known for whale concentration. Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported off Kihei. Lateral currents in strong winds.
