Typhoon Lagoon / Maui kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
United States · Hawaii
Overview
Typhoon Lagoon is a spot on Maui's south coast in the Kihei area, between Kamaole and Kalama Beach Park. The evocative name references the windy conditions found here. Northeast trade winds are strongly channeled and accelerated by the Haleakala massif (3,055 m / 10,023 ft), creating a powerful venturi effect in the afternoon. Wind blows from the north/northeast, side-shore relative to the west-facing coast. The spot offers dynamic and windy conditions, ideal for intermediate riders seeking sustained wind.

On the water
Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. Chop can be significant in strong winds — the "Typhoon Lagoon" name is well-earned. Moderate to strong lateral currents depending on wind strength. Conditions are generally windier than neighboring spots due to local acceleration effects.
Hazards
Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present on the reef. Potentially very strong wind — gusts can surprise less experienced riders. Lateral currents reinforced by wind. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported off Kihei. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance.
