Tavares Bay / Maui kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
United States · Hawaii
Overview
Tavares Bay sits on Maui's north shore in the Paia area, near the famous Spreckelsville spot. This spot benefits from direct exposure to northeast trade winds, which blow consistently and powerfully. The bay offers some shelter compared to more exposed north shore spots. Conditions are good for intermediate riders, with varied water between the inner lagoon and open ocean beyond the reef. The north shore Maui kitesurf and windsurf community is one of the most active in the world.

On the water
Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. The bay offers a relatively flat inner lagoon protected by the reef, with waves beyond. North swell in winter creates wave riding conditions. Moderate currents in reef channels. Area popular with many riders — respect right-of-way rules.
Hazards
Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present on the reef. Currents in reef channels can pull offshore. Powerful north swell in winter. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) present on Maui's north shore. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Many riders on the water — stay vigilant.
