Sugar Cove / Maui kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
United States · Hawaii
Overview
Sugar Cove sits on Maui's north shore just east of the famous Spreckelsville spot, in the former sugar cane plantation area that gives the spot its name. This spot benefits from direct exposure to northeast trade winds that blow consistently and powerfully on this windward coast. Conditions are excellent for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with reliable wind and varied water. The reef creates a calmer inner lagoon while waves form beyond. The north shore Maui rider community is legendary.

On the water
Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. The reef creates a relatively flat inner lagoon with waves breaking beyond. North swell in winter creates excellent wave riding conditions. Currents in reef channels. Conditions very similar to neighboring Spreckelsville spot.
Hazards
Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Currents in reef channels can pull offshore. Abundant sea urchins on the reef. Powerful north swell in winter. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) present on Maui's north shore. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Many riders on the water — respect right-of-way rules.
