Overview

Stable Road is a spot on Maui's north shore in the Spreckelsville/Paia area, at the heart of the world's kitesurfing and windsurfing mecca. The spot takes its name from the old road leading to the sugar cane plantation stables. Stable Road benefits from direct exposure to northeast trade winds that blow with remarkable consistency and power. The reef creates an inner lagoon accessible for progression, while waves beyond the reef offer excellent wave riding conditions. It is one of the most popular and beloved spots on Maui's north shore.

On the water

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. The reef creates a relatively flat inner lagoon, perfect for freestyle and progression. Beyond the reef, waves form for wave riding, particularly spectacular with north swell in winter. Currents in reef channels. Area very popular with riders — world-class atmosphere.

Hazards

Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Currents in reef channels can pull offshore. Abundant sea urchins. Powerful north swell in winter — significant waves beyond the reef. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) present on Maui's north shore. Humpback whales from December to April — 100 yards distance. Many riders (kiters, windsurfers, foilers) — respect right-of-way and water traffic rules.
