Overview

Olowalu Beach Park is located on Maui's west coast between Lahaina and McGregor Point. This spot is renowned for its exceptional coral reef, one of the most beautiful and preserved on Maui. Northeast trade winds are channeled around the West Maui Mountains, blowing from the north/northeast in the afternoon. The water is relatively sheltered, providing accessible conditions. The beach is less crowded than nearby tourist spots, offering more space. The reef creates a shallow water zone close to shore.

On the water

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is an extensive coral reef — one of Maui's largest. Water is relatively flat and sheltered. Watch for very shallow reef at low tide, which can make navigation hazardous. Green sea turtles (honu) are very common in this coral-rich area. Moderate currents along the reef.

Hazards

Very extensive and shallow coral reef — reef booties absolutely essential. Reef extremely shallow at low tide — risk of grounding and injuries. Abundant sea urchins on the reef. Protected sea turtles (honu) very common — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) reported in the Olowalu area. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Do not touch or walk on coral — it is protected.
