Overview

Puamana Beach Park is located on the west coast of Maui, just south of Lahaina. This spot benefits from northeast trade winds channeled around the West Maui Mountains, creating reliable afternoon thermal winds blowing from the north/northeast. The beach offers relatively easy water access with a mix of sand and rocks. The water is semi-sheltered by the west coast of Maui, providing calmer conditions than north shore spots. Stunning views of Lanai and Kahoolawe islands.

On the water

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra or rashguard is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. Water is generally flatter than on the north shore, with moderate chop in strong winds. Currents are moderate along the coast. South swell in summer can bring waves, and northwest swell in winter can wrap around the point and reach the spot.

Hazards

Coral reef and rocks near shore — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present on the reef. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) present in West Maui waters. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Lateral currents along the coast. Rocks at launch — choose your entry point carefully.
