Overview

Hanakao'o Beach Park, also known as "Canoe Beach," is located on Maui's west coast just south of Kaanapali. This historic spot is traditionally used for Hawaiian outrigger canoe racing. Northeast trade winds are channeled around the West Maui Mountains, blowing from the north/northeast in the afternoon. The water is semi-sheltered with accessible conditions for intermediate riders. The sandy beach offers easy launching. Parking and amenities available.

On the water

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. Water is relatively flat with moderate chop in strong winds. Area shared with Hawaiian outrigger canoes — be very vigilant and give them priority. Moderate currents along the coast. Green sea turtles (honu) frequently spotted.

Hazards

Outrigger canoe racing zone — absolute priority to traditional watercraft. Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present. Many swimmers and snorkelers in the area. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance.
