Wind specificities
Kythira sits at the transition between Ionian and Aegean wind patterns. The dominant summer wind can come from N/NNE (Meltemi influence from the Aegean) or NW (Ionian Maestro). On the east coast, N/NNE wind channels through the strait between Kythira and the Peloponnese, creating acceleration. Wind arrives side-onshore to onshore (N=side-shore, NE=onshore, E=onshore). 12-22 knots in summer.
Hazards
Maritime traffic: ferries and cargo ships in the strait. Currents in the strait in strong wind. Isolated island with limited rescue. Rocky bottom in places. Ride with company.
