Overview
Schinias is THE reference kite spot of Athens, located in Marathon Bay in northeast Attica. This large, shallow bay facing NE receives the Meltemi fully onshore, offering the best wind conditions in the entire Athens region.
Marathon Bay is famous for its immense sandy beach lined with a protected pine forest (Schinias National Park). The shallow water and reliable Meltemi make it an exceptional spot, attracting hundreds of riders on Meltemi days in summer. It's the main playground for the Athenian kite community.

The spot works with winds from N, NNE, NE, ENE, E.
Spot functioning
The spot works from May to October with the Meltemi. July-August are the best months with almost daily wind. Sessions from 11 AM to sunset. The shallow water (standing depth for hundreds of meters) is perfect for beginners and progression. In strong Meltemi (>20 knots), conditions become more demanding with chop. Several kite schools operate at the spot.

On the water
Shallow water (1-1.5m for hundreds of meters) with regular sandy bottom. In moderate Meltemi, small short chop of 20-40cm. In strong Meltemi, chop of 40-70cm with small waves. Water is clearer than the south coast of Athens. Temperature: 22-26°C in summer. Uniform sandy bottom allows safe riding.
Parking
Large car park behind Schinias beach, free or low cost. The area is part of Schinias National Park — respect environmental regulations. Access from Athens via Attiki Odos highway then the Marathon road (about 45 min). Tavernas and small shops along the beach road. Kite schools with equipment storage on site.
Wind specificities
The Meltemi arrives from N/NNE fully onshore on this NE-facing bay. This is the windiest spot in the Athens region thanks to direct Aegean exposure and no land obstacles to the NE. Typical strength: 15-25 knots, gusting to 30 knots in strong Meltemi (July-August).
Wind typically starts late morning (11 AM-noon) and stays sustained until sunset. Afternoon thermal acceleration can add 3-5 knots to the synoptic Meltemi. Windy days: 70-80% in July-August.
Hazards
In strong Meltemi (>25 knots), significant chop even in the shallow water. Overcrowding on Meltemi days — dozens of kites in the air, collision possible. Respect right of way and safety distances. National Park area: do not walk on dunes and protected vegetation. Coastal currents in strong wind.
