Les 3 Colonnes — Le Barcarès — Pyrénées-Orientales. Iconic spot of the Barcarès, originally famous for windsurfing, now a major kite & wing spot. Located north of the town centre along Avenue du Lido, around the monument of three columns. Official kite zone.
Works best with SE wind / Marin / thermal from the south. Regular waves when the sea wind blows — great for surfkite and dynamic riding. By Tramontane NW: less sheltered than the étang spots, offshore conditions on the beach.
The famous stranded paquebot Lydia is nearby — unique landmark. Near the bassin des Dins d'Illes (Éole and Parc des Dosses for flat water étang sessions). Many kite schools based here.
SurfandKite — Kite school, est. 2014, approved by Ministry of Youth & Sports + AFKite. Courses, stages, rental. Sky Fly Kite School — All levels, equipment provided. UCPA — Base Éole & Coudalère, beginners to freestyle. Free SUP evenings in summer (18h-20h).
Open all year round
Sailing year-round. Official kite zone. Best: summer SE thermals (June-September) + Marin. Also works by Tramontane for experienced riders.
Intermediate
Sandy bottom. Beach faces ESE. Regular waves by Marin/SE — good for surfkite. By Tramontane NW: offshore, technical. Paquebot Lydia landmark visible from the water. Water 14-16°C winter, 20-25°C summer.
Parking along Avenue du Lido. Kite launch behind the dunes — narrow and sloped, technical. Arrive early in summer.
SE / Marin / Thermal S: main wind. Waves build well. Particularly active when SE blows or south thermal in summer. Tramontane (NW): offshore on the beach, less ideal than étang spots. When Tramontane: better at Parc des Dosses or Éole (flat étang). Originally a windsurf Mecca — now shared with kite and wing.
Narrow launch area: behind the dunes, sloped and tight — technical kite handling. Ganivelles and dunes: dune-protecting posts, careful with kite lines. SE fort: becomes technical with big onshore waves. Summer crowds: very popular spot, arrive early. Paquebot Lydia: stranded ship on the beach nearby — landmark but obstacle.
