Spot de Le Sillon Beach - Saint-Malo (Emerald Coast)

Le Sillon Beach - Saint-Malo (Emerald Coast) kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot

France · Bretagne

48.66 | -2.00

Overview

Plage du Sillon is Saint-Malo's iconic kitesurf spot, one of France's most beautiful beaches stretching 3 km of fine sand. Bordered by the medieval ramparts of the Corsair City, it offers a setting unique in France, comparable only to Biarritz for kite practice in the heart of a historic city.

Exposed north toward Mont-Saint-Michel Bay, the beach works from west to northeast and can accommodate many riders thanks to its size. The water is flat at low tide, with some waves on the Rochebonne side (east) for bump & jump enthusiasts. Ideal for freeride, with NE thermals in the afternoon during summer.

Strong tidal range (up to 12 m): the beach configuration changes dramatically with the tide. Off-season (September to June), 5 km of beach are available. In summer, the zone is marked by yellow buoys at Rue Mi-Grève, 300 m wide up to 50 m from the seawall. FFVL-labeled spot managed by Emeraude Kite association.

On the water

The Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe (up to 13m at equinox spring tides). The beach is vast at low tide and almost entirely covered at high tide. Strong tidal currents — always know tide times before going out. Flat to choppy water — no ocean swell inside the bay. Excellent foiling conditions at mid-tide.

Wind specificities

Works from west to northeast. Ideal conditions: westerly wind (port tack side), NW-N-NE (onshore to side-onshore). Wind can be disrupted by the seawall and ramparts — move toward Fort National (west side) for cleaner wind, or toward Plage du Pont (east side) depending on direction. Most riders launch near the Surfschool / Thermes Marins, the central launch zone.

In summer, NE thermal in the afternoon — perfect for relaxed side-onshore sessions. During NW storms, challenging conditions for experts only.

Hazards

Strong tidal range: at high tide, the beach becomes very narrow and navigation space shrinks dramatically near the seawall. Avoid riding close to the seawall at high tide — collision risk and dangerous currents.

Rocky areas invisible at high tide — they emerge at low tide, especially near Rochebonne. Historic breakwater posts are traps to absolutely avoid. Mandatory coexistence with surfers, coastal swimmers, walkers and bathers — kite is not a priority. In summer, July-August ban from 9am to 7pm in swimming areas.
