THE ROOTS Surf Shop (Takayuki Fukuchi)

THE ROOTS is the surf shop of Takayuki Fukuchi, a former JPSA grand champion (Japan's pro tour), in Katakai, Kujukuri town, Chiba. The shop is a two-minute walk from the Katakai Shindutsumi break, described as the most consistently surfable spot in Japan.

The shop offers boards shaped by Fukuchi, board and wetsuit rental, board lockers and repairs. It also sells several surf brands.

The surf school runs small groups of one to five students per instructor, with separate levels: first-timers, beginners, intermediate and advanced, kids, seniors, and special lessons with Fukuchi for people aiming at competition. The sandy bottom at Katakai is shallow, so children can be taught where they can stand. There is a female staff member and a changing room.

9:00 to 17:00 (until 19:00 in summer). Closed on Thursdays.
